WPF DataGrid CTP now available from WPF Team

As we announced back at Mix08 and TechEd08, the WPF team is working on a DataGrid and Ribbon control.  Today, we've just made the DataGrid available in CTP form on Codeplex (http://CodePlex.com/wpf).

The DataGrid will require 3.5sp1 to run.  We'd love to hear what you think...

Hi Rob

Can you clarify what this codeplex project will be used for?  Will other MS sourced WPF projects be consolidated into this one?

Will non-MS staff be able to contribute?

Will the appearance of a control in this project mean that it won't end up in the actual runtime, because of licensing issues?

Thanks

Joe

Hello Rob,

And what is the expected date for the Ribbon control to appear at CodePlex?

Joe -

Hi, I'm Samantha, the PM on Tree Services/Controls and the Codeplex site.  The WPF Codeplex project was introduced as a vehicle for the WPF team at Microsoft to release new features and samples out of band with the .NET Framework.  Our main reason for choosing Codeplex was to allow users to get new functionality more quickly and to have an efficient means for users to give feedback to the product team. You will see more features like DataGrid in the Toolkit in the future, and also samples in the Futures release.

At this point, non-MS developers cannot contribute to the site, but this is definitely an option which we are leaving open for the future.

Many of the features that appear on the Codeplex site will end up back in the runtime, but not all of them.  Generally this will depend on the feedback we get from users. We are planning to move the finished version of DataGrid back into the platform for our next release, for example.  We realize that this move will cause the license terms on the DataGrid to become more restrictive than they were on Codeplex, but we felt that the benefit of getting the controls to our customers and partners early outweighed the cost of slight confusion with the licensing when certain controls are moved back to the platform.  Of course if you have any questions about licensing, you can feel free to contact the team and we can clarify for you.

Thanks for your interest in the WPF Codeplex site!

We don't have a set date for Ribbon yet, but we are hoping to release a preview of it sometime this fall.  Also, just FYI, Ribbon may or may not ship via Codeplex due to special licensing requirements for the Ribbon control.  We'll have more information about this as we get closer to the release.  Thanks!
