System.Xaml CTP

Our team was planning on releasing a CTP of System.Xaml.dll in November, but we had to reprioritize the CTP as we had several hot issues that we needed to address.

We’re still dealing with hot issues, and don’t want to predict the date that we’ll get around to it, as we don’t want to lead you astray twice.  Minimally, we’ll be in the first beta of .NET 4.

We’re hard at work making this new XAML system a reality and integrated with WPF/WF/WCF…sorry for the delay.

Rob, I couldn't find any announcement related to .net shipment (at least planning). Is it closed information for the moment? Can we expect it to appear during year 2009 at least in beta? Thanks.

Was wondering what happened to the CTP! whats the role of baml in the official xaml assembly? I heard something about baml being something only WPF would probably be using, I take it we can still compile any arbitrary xaml document to baml if we want? for example i generate a custom solution that primarily uses xaml to describe and want to compile to baml.

Denis-

Yes, the beta should come in 2009.

Stephen-

Baml2006Reader is a subclass of XamlReader (the new one in System.Xaml).  Baml2006Reader is, like the BAML format, pretty WPF specific, although it can deal with non-WPF types, just not as optimially.  Right now, we plan to make Baml2006Reader a public class that ships in PresentationFramework.dll.

Yes, you will still be able to use BAML for non-WPF scenarios...in fact you'll likely have some more flexibilities, since BamlReader and BamlWriter will be public, given current plans.

Thanks, Rob

Hello Rob, one more question if you don't mind. Does the information mentioned above means that companies won't have an opportunity using System.Xaml within existing .net 3.5 products and will have to wait the .net 4.0 release?

# re: System.Xaml CTP@ Saturday, December 20, 2008 4:06 AM

The most funny thing is that "Xaml.dll" (1.0.1215.0) is being already deployed with "Microsoft Small Basic". I don't understand why we can observe XamlXmlWriter inside Small Basic (with 2.0 mscorlib) and still wait for .net 4.0 with (4.0 mscorlib)?

Can I use the new classes of System.Xaml to compile XAML files to BAML?

Baml2006Reader will be in PresentationFramework.dll.  We believe we'll be shipping a Baml2006Writer in Dev10, but aren't sure what assembly it will ship in yet.  Likely not System.Xaml.dll.
